Dave Reynolds turns on the Cherry Lake magic!
Friday 28 July 2017
Dave and Julie Reynolds are amongst our most regular guests and friends who have been visiting Cherry Lakes once or twice a year for the last four years. They have split their time fishing Cherry Lake, Cherry Mere or Cherry Springs. Whilst Dave has always done well on the smaller lakes, in truth he has struggled on Cherry Lake and up to this trip had only managed a few up to 23lb.
On arrival Dave said his target was three fish for a week from his stay in Osprey Lodge. Well I am not sure what Dave ‘had stood in’ but he has been on fire this week and is certainly weaving his magic. Since Sunday Dave has smashed his target and has caught 16 Carp including 10 over twenty pounds plus this stunning 35-04 Mirror below.
To be fair the conditions at Cherry Lakes this week have been perfect as far as summer Carp fishing goes. It has been warm (and not hot), frequently windy, some rain and plenty of showers, just the conditions you expect with low pressure. Whilst Dave has scored a lot more heavily than the other Cherry Lake anglers, I am pleased to say that all the anglers have caught this week, with 2 Carp to 23lb in the Cottage, 4 Carp from Heron Lodge (3 over 20lb to 28lb) and 3 to Jason Elvin including the 31-08 Ghost Mirror reported in my last post. I make the tally for the week being 16 x 20′s and 2x 30′s!
Dave Reynolds used a bait boat to identify several spots which he fancied, and having found them he kept the feed going (Pellets and broken bolies) all week. By keep feeding the Carp simply could not resist coming back for a snack. Small pop-ups over the pellet accounted for most of the Carp including the big one. I think I have said before that the Cherry Lake Carp love pellets of all sizes and it is a bait which I personally think that you cannot over-feed.
This magnificent Mirror carp was last out at the end of April to Wayne Box at 35-06. A remarkably consistent weight for a Carp which looks like a female fish. If so we would believe that she has been feeding well and recovered her weight from spawning and if she continues in good health she is also on track to become a 40lb+ Carp in the next year or two.
In catching this lady Dave becomes the latest member of the Cherry Lakes 30+ club. he says he will be wearing his polo shirt with pride when he returns again next year. Well done Dave.
I will provide an update on the other lakes in my next post.
